A precursor to IMI is the InnoMed [1] Integrated Project, supported by the European Commission under the 6th Framework Programme. It kicked off in October 2005 to run for 40 months and it has a total budget of € 18 million to which the Commission contributes € 12 million.
With its 16 large pharmaceutical companies cooperating with 14 universities and 8 SMEs it clearly demonstrates that collaboration between several pharmaceutical companies and with the other stakeholders is not only feasible, but also productive.
The InnoMed project is actually composed of two sub-projects:
